In the detergent packaging design project, carried out with an innovative approach and with the goal of enabling quick product recognition on retail shelves, IKAS Industrial Design Studio initiated the design process with a focus on creating a distinctive, functional form identity aligned with the target market. This product was specifically designed and developed for the Georgian market.
In the first stage, the design of the detergent bottle was prioritized. Throughout the design process, multiple conceptual and formal directions were explored and developed. Key parameters included creating an innovative form identity consistent with the character of liquid detergent products and establishing distinctive form cues, so that the packaging could be quickly recognized and distinguished on store shelves even without the presence of a label.
Subsequently, an ergonomic handle was designed to ensure ease of carrying and use. In addition, the appropriate label placement was determined in harmony with the bottle’s form, allowing the complete display of graphic elements and product information. At the same time, the technical requirements and production constraints of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) bottles—including manufacturability, mold limitations, and industrial production processes—were carefully considered throughout the design.
At several stages of the development process, the designs entered the prototype development phase. Using 3D printing technology, multiple physical prototypes of the bottle were produced. These prototypes were evaluated based on various parameters such as form, dimensions, ergonomics, hand feel, structural stability, and visual readability.
In parallel, the dimensions and forms of the designed bottles were comparatively analyzed against existing products on retail shelves in Georgia. This comparison helped accurately assess the level of differentiation, shelf recognition, and compatibility with the standards and purchasing habits of the target market.
Furthermore, the final bottle form was designed to provide adequate impact resistance. Through the use of controlled curves, the design ensures structural stability during storage, carton stacking, and transportation. Another key consideration of the project was maintaining proportional consistency and formal harmony between the two product sizes, creating a unified visual identity within the brand’s product portfolio.
Finally, the detergent label was designed to complete the packaging’s visual identity. In this phase, colors and forms were selected to harmonize with the bottle design while conveying a sense of cleanliness, softness, and purity associated with laundry detergent, thereby enhancing the product’s attractiveness at the point of sale.
